FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Barbara Neal, Executive Director
Vermont 9-1-1 System Status
At approximately 2:44 PM today, the Enhanced 9-1-1 Board became aware of a statewide 9-1-1 outage. Vermont 9-1-1 was unable to receive inbound 9-1-1 calls between 2:36 PM and 3:13 PM. The system is currently operational and 9-1-1 calls are being properly processed.
The 9-1-1 system provider, FairPoint Communications, has provided a log of all callers who attempted to reach 9-1-1 during this outage. Board staff are attempting to contact each of those callers at this time.
This is the second statewide 9-1-1 outage this summer. The first event, on 6/22/2016, was the result of a software coding issue in the call handling software. Preliminary information indicates today’s event was similar to the earlier outage and may be related to the text to 9-1-1 functionality.
Text to 9-1-1 capability has been disabled until FairPoint completes its investigation. Attempts to text to Vermont 9-1-1 will result in a bounce-back message indicating the service is not available and directing the texter to place a voice call to 9-1-1. Voice calls to 9-1-1 are processing normally.
Updated information will be released when it becomes available.
